In the impoverished towns and cities of Ecuador, families without means build their lives on illegally obtained land through invasions. The invaders show up by the hundreds to build their homes and businesses on any available land they can find, regardless of who owns it. Sometimes the homes are built on the side of the road, just feet away from traffic. Depending on where the land is and its value, the government either yields and legalizes the invasion, or comes in with bulldozers and police to deconstruct. Such occasions have proven to be most violent, and often result in casualties. It might seem risky and illogical to spend all of one’s resources into such uncertain living arrangements, but to the invaders it is their only option.
